Digital forensics at the service of law enforcement agencies

Training on the Open Source Digital Forensics under the auspices of the OSCE.

From 4 to 8 June 2018, the International training center on migration and combating trafficking in human beings of the educational establishment “The Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus” hosted the regional training on "Open Source Digital Forensics" under the auspices of the OSCE Secretariat.

The training was attended by officers of drug control and counter trafficking units of the criminal militia of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, and representatives of specialized units to combat illicit drug trafficking in the Russian Federation.

The OSCE Secretariat was represented by Rasa Ostrauskaite, co-coordinator of activities to address transnational threats, Eduard Lokotunin, police affairs officer on combating illicit drugs, Alexander Malyshau, expert on digital forensics, and Jenni Dimitrova, administrative assistant, all representing the Strategic Police Matters Unit of the Transnational Threats Department (TNTD/SPMU).

This training, the third in a row, continued a series of training events held in 2016 and 2017 with organizational, expert and financial support of the OSCE Secretariat. The knowledge gained in the course of the previous courses is successfully used in the practical activities of the represented units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus and Russia. Also, training modules have been introduced into the training process for the training of cadets of the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. In the future, a specialized training course on digital forensics is planned to be develop jointly with the OSCE experts for law enforcement officers involved in combating the spread of drugs.

Undoubtedly, successful struggle against many types of modern crime, especially in the sphere of high technologies, requires the high-quality training of law enforcement officers and international cooperation between states and non-governmental organizations. And the International training center is serving this goal.
